More than gin

In late 2015 we bought a degraded piece of land near Barrydale, in the Tradouw Valley,

We manage the farm based on regenerative agricultural principles, including permaculture, agroforestry and holistic management .

The challenge is to make small farms like ours work by implementing a diverse range of smaller integrated income streams.

One of the main income streams we selected was the distilling of fruits and botanicals, not only because it was a long time passion but also because it fits our context well. The Tradouw Valley has a long distilling history and produces export quality fruit. As a result, all ingredients necessary for excellent fruit brandies are on our doorstep. The area is also rich in fauna, including aromatic and medicinal botanicals such as Buchu, Artemisia Afra (Wilde Als), Confetti Bush and countless others. All these are ideally suited for making high-quality botanical spirits, including gin, absinthe and aquavit.

Waste products from the distilling process are integrated and recycled into the farm’s ecology. For example, we feed grains to our chickens and compost fruit pulp, fueling the soil regeneration process.

At our still, we aim to create no-nonsense, high-quality spirits from ingredients and botanicals found and grown on our farm and in the valley. Our state of the art distillery equipment also allows us to distil world-class whisky and rum.

The success of small farms like ours has always been a challenge financially, and sustainability is certainly not a given. Only through hard work, innovation and support from the local community and general public can we continue our labour of love.

We strive to produce quality products at reasonable prices and proudly plough our profits back into the farm and the upliftment of the people who work the land.
